Why Studying in the United States is Better(Series Post #2)

The choice whether to Chinese depends on the several factors.  However, there are two main factors to be used in the arguments if they would fare better in American universities or consider studying in their home country.  First, the quality of education between universities and colleges of the two countries can be a factor in the success of the students.  Second would be the current economic situation in China that would impact on the educational decision of students, for example, major, skills needed to be developed.

Quality of Education

Comparing the quality of education between educational institutions, whether in the United States or China, is difficult.  It is possible that one institution offer better foundations in one major over another university while the other having higher quality in a different major.  Rather than comparing them universities in China and the United States between majors, it would be better to assess the overall performance of universities.  One way of doing this would be to rank the universities in the country.  This does not only gauge the quality of education provided by an institution but also takes into consideration other factors, for instance, facilities, research capabilities, that can have significant influence in the development of the student (Times Higher Education ).

One of the reputable global university ranking organization ranks 7 American universities in the top 10 of the list claiming the first and second spot on the list (Times Higher Education).  In the top 20 there are 15 American universities that made the list signifying the quality of education offered in the country (Times Higher Education).  China on the other hand only enters the list at 46 with Peking University then followed by Tsinghua University at 52^nd place (Times Higher Education).  These are the only 2 universities in China that has entered the top 200 list compared to the number of universities in the United States that entered the top 50 alone.

Comparing the results between the universities in the two countries provides compelling evidence of which country provides better education for students.  Chinese students opting to study in the United States can gain access to better education compared to staying in their home country and study there.  However, this may not only be the reason for students to better in the United States.  Students who fail to enter American universities in the top 10 of the list still have the opportunity to gain education in a university ranked inside the top 20 and even 50.  In China, on the other hand, students only have the opportunity of being in a ranked 46^th and 52^nd university where their chances are slimmer. The United States essentially provides not only the quality of education but also the better opportunity of entering one.

Diversity of Majors

Another area of consideration would be the majors offered in universities in both countries.  White mention that as Chinese economy becomes more structured, there is a trend of students seeking majors beyond the default courses such as engineering, economics and business. Chinese students are now moving away from traditional majors and seek alternative careers considering the economic outlook of the country.  White said, Sadly, Chinese universities do not offer many of the courses that student seek or offer them in mediocrity if they are available.  Students, thus, have better opportunities to excel in their chosen careers if they are going to study in the United States where they have the chance to enter top tier universities no matter the field of study they are going to choose.  In this manner, the decision of students is simplified whether to study in the United States, have the chance to enter a prestigious university and the opportunity to excel in their field or study in a Chinese university that offers a lower quality of education.

The English Language and Gaokao

As China continues to experience economic growth, more foreign companies are making their presence in the country.  According to White As a result, English becomes a coveted skill among the labor force.  Studying in the United States exposes students to the English language better than studying in a Chinese university.  This potentially can help benefit students in landing a good job from a multinational company as much as their choice of major or university they have attended.

Another motivation for Chinese students would be the Chinese national college entrance exam or gaokao (Lai).  Students who are ranked lower in the exams may be prevented from entering top-tier universities in China, thereby, reducing their chances of a better future (Lai). For those who did not do well in the exams, it is possible for Chinese students to still enter top-tier universities if they would study in the United States (Lai). Better, American universities do not have an integrated testing that would determine which university they can attend. If they fail to enter one university, it is possible that they still have an opportunity to enter another.

American universities provide the best opportunities for Chinese students.  It can provide them with better foundations important to their development as students and later professionals.  Similarly, universities in the United States offer a wider range of majors in top tier as compared to Chinese universities.  More importantly, it provides the students the chance to become more proficient with the English language that can help them in land jobs in a reputable company back in their country. So I am totally deem that study in U.S. have more benefits than study in native country.
